Pohang University of Science and Technology
Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) is a private university located in Pohang City, Gyeongsang-Pukdo Province. It was founded in 1986 at the initiative of the Korean steel company POSCO. Pohang University was intended to be the first Korean university to focus on close interaction with industry.

In its relatively short history, POSTECH has become a globally recognised education and research center. According to the QS International University Rankings, it performs very well: 100th in the world and 19th among Asian universities.

Currently, Pohang University has about 2,000 students. The educational process at POSTECH is based on the principle of individual approach to each student and the creation of conditions that would allow future scientists to become a part of the academic community at the stage of study. Following its motto of "Integrity, Ingenuity and Aspiration", Pohang University of Science and Technology continues to work towards becoming one of the best universities in the country and the world.

Academic Programmes | Tuition and Fees

Pohang University of Science and Technology offers undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate and integrated academic Master's-PhD programmes. The last ones allow students to get a Doctoral degree, by passing the Master's degree stage.


The registration fee is 80,000 KRW. Applicants with a diploma from a POSTECH partner university are exempted from paying the registration fee. The tuition fee for undergraduate studies is 5,580,000 KRW, for Master's, Postgraduate and Integrated Programmes it is 10,344,000 KRW per year. There is also an examination fee in the amount of KRW 898,000.

Admission Requirements
All programmes are taught in English. International students are required to provide a certificate showing that they have sufficient language proficiency to master the material.
Minimum certificate requirements
  • TOEFL IBT 79 or PBT 550
  • TOEIC 750
  • IELTS 6.0 or TEPS 600 (New TEPS 327)

Applicants with citizenship of Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand or the United Kingdom, as well as graduates of universities of the above countries, may not have to prove their level. Graduates are required to provide a document certified by the previous university which confirms that their studies were conducted entirely in English.
Although proficiency in Korean is not compulsory, applicants with minimal knowledge of Korean have an advantage.
Scholarships and Grants
Pohang University offers scholarship programmes specifically adapted to the needs of the individual student

Normally, students cannot receive several scholarships at the same time, however, exceptions are possible. At least 10 credits and a GPA of at least 2.0 for the previous semester are necessary in order to qualify for university scholarships. These conditions are not applicable to the State Scholarship Programme for Science and Engineering and the Chigok Programme.

For excellent academic performance, academic achievements and allowances for exchange students
International students are entitled to a settlement allowance. Foreign graduate students who come out of Korea and have not resided in Korea for 6 months before enrolling are eligible for the allowance. (1,500,000 KRW for 3 months and one-way airfare)
Master's degree: minimum 1,500,000 KRW per month, Doctoral degree: minimum 2,000,000 KRW per month.
Korean Language Courses at the University
Pohang University has a Language Learning Centre. Undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students studying at POSTECH can enroll in the Korean Language Course.
