Chonnam National University is one of the state universities in South Korea. It is located in the city of Gwangju, known as the "City of Hope and Light". Gwangju has a vibrant cultural life.It hosts the Gwangju Biennale, the Kimchi Festival, the Jung Yul-seong International Music Festival and the Gwangju International Film Festival.

Today, Chonnam University has about 21,000 students. About 1,000 of them are foreigners. The university not only strives to provide the necessary professional knowledge to each of them, but also to instill in them leadership qualities and the values of humanism. These are the principles that form the basis of Chonnam University's philosophy. The ideals of the university are reflected in its motto - "Truth, Creativity and Service". Service is of particular importance to Chonnam as the university was founded through the support of local people. Therefore, Chonnam encourages students and graduates to make their own contribution to the development of their small homeland.

Academic Programmes | Tuition and Fees

Chonnam University's academic programmes have three levels of education. The highest degree a Chonnam graduate can receive is a Doctor of Science.


Undergraduate studies consist of 2 parts. Part 1: 370,000-407,000 KRW, Part 2: 1,467,000-2,029,000 KRW per semester.


The cost of one semester at Master's and PhD level is from 2,354,000 KRW to 4,535,000 KRW. The registration fee is KRW 60,000 and 70,000 KRW respectively.

Admission Requirements
International students must be proficient in Korean and English.

All certificates must be valid at the time of admission and the scores listed above are the minimum for admission.

Students from English-speaking countries must submit only the TOPIK certificate.
For admission to undergraduate programmes:
  • TOPIK Level 3 certificate / Level 3 certificate from Chonnam Language Training Centre must be presented to prove Korean language proficiency. For the Yeosu Campus, the mentioned certificates of Level 2 can be submitted.
  • In order to prove English language proficiency, TOEFL 550 (CBT 210, IBT 80), IELTS 5.5, TEPS 550, TOEIC 700 are accepted.
Graduate and postgraduate applicants are required to have:
  • TOPIK Level 3 certificate or a Level 3 certificate from Chonnam Language Training Centre.
  • TOEFL 530 (CBT 197, IBT 71) / IELTS 5.5 / CEFR B2, TEPS 600 (NEW TEPS 326) / TOEIC 700.
Scholarships and Grants
Chonnam University provides a range of scholarship programmes for international students. Academic scholarships are based on academic performance and are awarded according to ranking.
Korean Language Courses at the University
Chonnam Language Training Centre
  • The academic year is divided into 4 semesters (spring, summer, autumn and winter), each of which lasts 10 weeks. During this time students study 200 hours of Korean language.
  • Admission to a course at the appropriate Level (1-6) is based on a placement test.
  • Small groups of up to 20 students are formed to ensure a comfortable learning environment.
