Ewha Women’s University

Ewha Women’s University is a private women's university that dates back to 1886. It was Korea's first Western-style institution for women. It was named Ewha (Korean for "pear blossom") by Emperor Gojong. The university was founded by American missionary Mary F. Scranton.

In 1946, Ewha University became the first accredited four-year, bachelor's degree programme in Korea. Since then, the university has grown into a world center for women's education based on a harmonious blend of Christian values and Korean pedagogical traditions.

The university has more than 20,000 students. According to the QS International University Rankings, Ewha University is ranked 498th in 2024. It is 43rd among Asian universities and ninth among South Korean universities.

The core values of Ihwa University are reflected in its motto - "Truth, Virtue, Beauty" (Jin represents knowledge, Sun represents goodness, Mi represents harmony). The University sees its female students as an intellectual elite paving the way for the future of the country and the world. Much attention in the activities of the University is paid to women empowerment, cooperation with society and research activities.

Academic Programmes | Tuition and Fees

Ewha University programmes cover all levels of education from undergraduate to postgraduate and doctoral studies.


Tuition fees include a registration fee of 150,000 KRW and a semester fee, which depends on the program and ranges from 7,645,000 KRW to 12,896,000 KRW (for 2024).

Admission Requirements
Education at Ewha Women’s University is open only to women.
Foreign applicants must demonstrate their proficiency in Korean or English.
Undergraduate (Bachelor's degree)
  • All first-year students (except the Department of International Studies) must take Korean language courses and Basic Liberal Arts courses provided by the HOKMA College of General Studies, depending on the level of Korean language proficiency.
  • Applicants to the Department of International Studies (International Studies, Global Korean Studies) must meet one or more of the following English language requirements:TOEFL certificate (PBT 550, iBT 80), IELTS 6.0, New TEPS 326 or higher
Graduate and Postgraduate (Master's Degree and Postgraduate Degree - PhD)
  • TOPIK certificate of Level 4 or higher;
  • Korean language course certificate from Ihwa Language Centre, Level 4 or higher;
  • TOEFL (PBT 550, iBT 80), IELTS 5.5 (from 2022 6.0), New TEPS 326 or higher
If the foreign applicant has previously studied entirely in English or Korean, the certificates listed above are not required.

Additional requirements for applicants to Master's and Postgraduate Programmes:
1) for admission to the Department of Law, a minimum of three years of experience in the practice of law is required;
2) for admission to the Department of Nursing, applicants must have at least three years of clinical experience;
3) Clinical Medicine and Dentistry programmes are only open to graduates of the Department of Medicine and Department of Dentistry respectively;
4) The Doctorate in Early Childhood Education is open only to applicants working in a field related to early childhood education at the time of admission.

ISS for Ewha graduates who are employed by the university staff and intend to continue their studies at a higher level.
Full tuition fees are provided (up to 4 semesters).
Scholarship programmes for students continuing their studies
The payments are reviewed every semester. The application is submitted online.

One-time payment is provided for undergraduate students who have received the TOPIK 6 certificate for the first time.

The Ewha Language Centre
The Ewha Language Centre has been operating at the university since 1962. By now, the center has developed its own approach to teaching Korean and has developed its own textbooks aimed at developing speaking skills.
