Hanyang University

Hanyang University is a private research university. The main campus is located in Seoul and another one in the Research and Industry Cluster of Ansan City. The name of the university refers to the former name of Seoul, which was used during the Joseon Dynasty. The philosophy of the university and its founding principle is "love in deeds".

The history of Hanyang University dates back to 1939, when it became Korea's first institute of Engineering, Architecture and Civil Engineering. By now, Hanyang University has grown into a prestigious institution of higher learning with a well-developed structure and high quality education and research activities beyond engineering. At present, the university has more than 22,000 students, more than 3,000 of whom are international students. In addition, the university is among the top 200 universities according to the QS International University Rankings for 2024 and is ranked 164th. It is ranked 4th in the JoongAng University Rankings.

The university actively develops international relations. Its partners are 820 universities in 88 countries. Among them are Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge University and Tsinghua University.

Hanyang University offers Bachelor's, Master's and Doctoral study programmes.


The registration fee is 142,000 KRW. Tuition fees for Bachelor's Degree programmes range from 4,789,000 KRW to 7,093,000 KRW, for Master's and Doctoral programmes from 6,376,000 KRW to 10,021,000 KRW, (as of 2024). The admission fee for Master's and Doctoral programmes is 1,030,000 KRW.

Admission Requirements
For the Korean track:
  • Valid TOPIK or TOPIK IBT Level 4 certificate (not required for International Studies applicants).
  • A certificate from the Institute of International Education at Hanyang University of a similar level or higher.
For the English track:
  • TOEFL iBT 80 / IELTS 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT 89 / IELTS 6.5 — for the International Studies Track
Applicants from English-speaking countries do not need to prove English proficiency with a certificate.

Korean Language Courses at the University
The Institute of International Education at Hanyang University
  • The Korean course is enrolled 4 times a year: Spring (from March), Summer (from June), Autumn (from September) and Winter (from December) semesters.
  • Each semester lasts 10 weeks. During this time, students complete a total of 200 hours of Korean language.
